You get the things you'd expect from a social network (posts, photos, videos, comments, likes, profiles), but with no ads, no tracking, and no company holding your data. Your data lives on your device in open formats you can take with you, and each community sets its own rules. In short: it works for you, not for advertisers.

Your data stays on your own device, backups are encrypted, passwords are stored only as irreversible hashes, logins use two-factor authentication, and connections are encrypted with TLS. Each of these is explained in plain language in the Security section.

No. There are no central RSocial servers and no cloud account tied to your instance. Your data never leaves your device unless you send it somewhere yourself, so there's nothing on our side to look at. More in Your Data & Ownership.

Yes — and it's visible in the software itself: no ad libraries, no analytics trackers, no third-party scripts. A platform that isn't funded by advertising has no reason to collect and sell your behaviour. See No Ads, No Tracking.

Whoever has it still needs to get past your login, and with two-factor authentication a password alone isn't enough. Your encrypted backups stay unreadable without your passphrase, so you can restore onto new hardware. Full answer in the Self-Hosting & FAQ page.
